The City of Greensboro Planning Department announced on Apr. 16 that it will hold a workshop about Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) for residents, homeowners, and builders. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the McGirt-Horton Branch Library located at 2501 Phillips Ave.

The workshop aims to inform the public about ADUs, which are smaller secondary housing units built on the same property as a primary residence. These units can be either attached or detached from the main home and offer flexible living arrangements for homeowners.

City staff will present information alongside a panel consisting of homeowners and builders who have recently constructed ADUs. The session will cover current standards for ADUs, building codes and permitting processes, various types and design options available, as well as tips regarding benefits and financing considerations.

According to city officials, ADUs can help support multigenerational households by providing additional living space while also offering opportunities for rental income. They are also seen as a way to add gentle housing density within neighborhoods without major changes to community character.

Residents interested in learning more about accessory dwelling units or attending the upcoming workshop can find additional resources at www.greensboro-nc.gov/ADUs.
