A five-year quest to host the World University Games in Greensboro has reached its final stages with a decision set to come in the fall, according to organizers involved in the campaign.
Greensboro and South Korea appeared to be the finalists to host The World University Games. The Games are second only to the Olympics in international competition, according to Hill Carrow, chairmen of the N.C. Bid Committee, speaking to wfmynews2. It attracts a delegation of 11,000 people from around the world, including 7,500 athletes.
“Most people won’t realize how big this is until it actually happens,” Carrow said. “This is second only to the Olympics when it comes to world games. We have worked on this bid process for the last half a decade. It is a very involved process but now it’s down to two players.”
Carrow said the World University Games is the largest event for student-athletes and will attract 600,000 spectators for two weeks of events. “In looking at real numbers of past World University Games, the average impact is somewhere between $150-million and more than $370-million depending on market size. It’s incredible,” Carrow said.
Greensboro has a strong bid because of its facilities, including the Greensboro Aquatic Center and the track and field facilities at North Carolina A&T.
The 2023 Winter University Games will be held in Lake Placid, New York.
