The Greensboro Fire Department announced on May 11 that it will mark its centennial with a rededication ceremony for the Old Central Fire Station on Saturday, May 16. The event will take place from 11 am to 2 pm at 318 N. Greene St., exactly one hundred years after the station’s original dedication in 1926.
The ceremony is intended to honor the legacy and service of generations of firefighters who have served Greensboro over the past century. According to organizers, both current firefighters and retirees are invited to a complimentary hot dog lunch and fellowship gathering beginning at 11 am, followed by an official rededication ceremony at 1 pm.
The department expressed gratitude for community support in making the event possible. Riding High Harley-Davidson provided financial backing, while Marriott Downtown offered space for the celebration and US Foods supplied food for attendees.
Guests attending the event will be able to view several historical displays related to the department’s heritage. These include a restored 1924 American LaFrance fire apparatus, a recently acquired horse-drawn steamer from 1904 owned by Dean Green, and a curated photo exhibit highlighting images and daily life at Central Station throughout different decades.
“This event is more than a ceremony, it is a tribute to the generations of firefighters whose courage, dedication, and service helped shape the Greensboro Fire Department into what it is today,” said Greensboro Fire Chief Jim Robinson. ”As we celebrate 100 years as a professional fire department, we are proud to preserve and honor the history of Central Station and the men and women who served there.”
The Greensboro Fire Department became an officially paid organization in 1926. The upcoming rededication aims both to reflect on this historic milestone and reaffirm its ongoing commitment to serving residents.
