Scented candles are all about making people feel good. It can be through the aroma, of course, or in the case of two Triad residents, it can be about entrepreneurial inroads.

Deja Alston, of Greensboro, North Carolina, and JaLisa Stevens, of Clayton, met in college and became friends with a long-term dream of embarking on a business together at some point in the future, according to a WFMY News 2 report.

The COVID-19 pandemic pushed them toward their dream, and the two paired up to create makeScents LLC in April 2020, WFMY News reported.

“We were brainstorming a way to start a business, when the pandemic hit, we were always wanting to do something, but when everything shut down … it gave us a little bit more time with our schedules to come up with ideas,” Alston told WFMY News.

They came up with a bunch of business ventures, but nothing really clicked until they researched the scented candles business.

“Then the lightbulb went off,” Alston said. “Candles are never out of season, it’s something everyone loves and enjoys.”

The business has sparked a science interest for Alston’s 5-year-old son, William, according to the report.

“It’s like a big science experiment to him,” Alston said. “I love that he wants to participate in the legacy we’re trying to build.”

The two are hoping to grow their business, now that things are getting back to normal, and maybe even open a physical shop, WFMY News reported. Till then, the duo is focused on gaining entrepreneurial experience.

“In the end, it’s more than just candles,” Alston said. “The vision, the purpose, the outcome of it all, knowing it is going to happen, and as long as we keep working toward that, I’m going to keep pushing toward that, and keep pushing for my business.”
