On June 27, Congresswoman Kathy Manning (NC-06) released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision in Moore v. Harper, the case brought by Republican Speaker of the North Carolina House Tim Moore to determine if the North Carolina Supreme Court holds the power to strike down gerrymandered congressional maps that violate the state constitution.
“Last year, North Carolina’s Republican-controlled state legislature submitted an egregiously gerrymandered Congressional map to make sure that Democrats could win no more than three out of the 14 Congressional seats. The partisan gerrymander would have robbed voters of the right to choose their representatives, in a state where there are more registered Democrats than Republicans, by manipulating Congressional districts with surgical precision to dilute Democratic votes. North Carolina’s Supreme Court struck down that highly partisan, gerrymandered map and appointed a bipartisan panel of special masters to draw competitive congressional districts, finally giving the people of North Carolina fair federal representation.
“I am glad to see that today, the Supreme Court upheld those fair congressional maps and refuted the debunked ‘independent state legislature theory,’ which would have erased checks and balances on state legislatures. Now, Congress must work to enact federal election standards so that no voter is disenfranchised by partisan gerrymandering,” said Congresswoman Kathy Manning (NC-06).
