Washington, DC – On May 31, Congresswoman Kathy Manning (NC-06) announced she will vote to lift the debt ceiling and prevent a devastating default on America’s debt that could result in an economic recession.

“Congress has a solemn obligation to pay the bills the country has already incurred. House Republicans, who manufactured this crisis, have a responsibility to pass this bill. I will also vote to pass this bill – upholding our obligation, preventing default, and protecting my constituents from the devastating impacts that could result from a default, including job loss and a recession,” said Congresswoman Kathy Manning (NC-06). “Despite the extreme budget cuts demanded by the House GOP, President Biden negotiated an agreement that lifts the debt ceiling, safeguards Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans’ health care, and protects the historic infrastructure investments and other key legislation Democrats passed in the 117th Congress.”

Specifically, H.R.3746:

Prevents Default: The agreement averts a catastrophic default that would trigger a recession, cost millions of jobs, devastate retirement accounts, and undermine the historic economic progress Democrats made over the past two years, including the creation of more than 12 million jobs and the lowest unemployment rate in more than 50 years.

Protects Americans’ Health Care and Retirements: The agreement protects Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act, safeguarding health insurance coverage for tens of millions of Americans.

Protects Democrats’ Legislation Passed in the 117th Congress: The agreement protects President Biden and Congressional Democrats’ key accomplishments from the past two years, including the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, the PACT Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act’s prescription medication provisions.
