More information

Burlington Animal Services has partnered with both Burlington and Graham's Recreation & Parks departments to provide Hikes with Hounds.

Hikes with Hounds matches trained volunteers with shelter dogs on a once-a-month, group hike on local trails in Alamance County. This volunteer opportunity offers adoptable dogs at Burlington Animal Services an enrichment activity that allows the dogs to enjoy nature, socialize with people and exercise. (It does the same for volunteers!)

BECOMING A VOLUNTEER

Volunteer Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older

Must be able to hike up to 4 miles at a moderate pace on uneven and natural surface terrain

Must attend volunteer orientation training before becoming a trail dog walker (see below)

Complete Hikes with Hounds Registration and Waiver form and submit a copy of photo ID prior to first hike

Orientation Training

To become a volunteer with Hikes with Hounds, participants must attend a one-time Volunteer Orientation Training hosted by Burlington Animal Services prior to any volunteering or hiking.

Information on upcoming training can be found on the Burlington Animal Services web page or by contacting Laura Michel by email or calling 336-578-0343, opt. 5.

Perspective volunteers should complete the online registration form and waiver (or bring the paper registration form to the training). In addition, all volunteers must turn in a copy of a photo ID at the training or prior to their first hike.
