New Every Day-40 Devotions for Disaster Survivors

Bargaining with God--Philippians 4: 11, 13

Bargaining with God over one’s troubles is like a teenager who negotiates with a parent over curfew. It’s natural, but not very productive. Instead of pleading with God to change the harsh facts of a situation, look to God for the key to contentment in all circumstances.

Though writing from a dreary dungeon prison, the apostle Paul penned his most upbeat letter, Philippians. Though needy and hungry, he found the secret of contentment—centering life in Christ.

Instead of basing happiness on external conditions, rest it on God’s unfailing connection to you. Outside situations are as fickle as the weather. Don’t hang your heart there. Center yourself in God, an unchanging anchor in a turbulent world.

If you have had the security of a house and also been homeless, a full closet and also only the shirt on your back, a stocked pantry but suddenly can’t plan your next meal, perhaps you have also found it possible, by your faith in Christ, to be quite content with little or with much. Through the strength of Christ, you can survive. Hang your heart there.

God of abundance, turn my heart toward you, that it may know true contentment. Amen.
