One Appalachian State University student died in late September as the higher-education institution continues its struggle with containing the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

The Greensboro News & Record reported on Oct. 5 that Appalachian State leaders also said seven new clusters of coronavirus cases within the residence halls, athletic teams and fraternities increased the number of active cases to 235 on Oct. 5.

Since the start of the academic year, Appalachian State has had approximately 630 COVID-19 cases — with 60% of those occurring in the last few weeks, the Greensboro News & Record reported.

While other universities with many active cases are switching to online learning, Appalachian State hasn't yet.

Chancellor Sheri Everts told students in her weekly email that they should continue wearing masks, quarantine if they need to, and answer calls from contact tracers, the Greensboro News & Record reported.

"Our current on-campus density is low; our available response resources remain high. We can offer flexible course delivery options to those who need it and, should we need to, we are ready to pivot to all-remote learning," Everts wrote in the email, the Greensboro News & Record reported.
