A barrage of gunfire in the 2000 block of Maywood Street in Greensboro, North Carolina, April 27 made apartment dwellers feel like they were in a war zone, and they’re concerned about innocent bystanders getting shot and killed.
“I would estimate it was probably 12, 13 kids out there, what if two or three of them had got hit?” Lionel Hyman, a witness, asked during an interview with WGHP.
The station reported that people were gathered in the parking lot before a car pulled up. A fight ensued shortly thereafter that quickly escalated into a gunfight.
“There had to be at least four guns out there, maybe 25, 30 shots back and forth,” Hyman said.
Hyman told the news station he saw people shooting at each other outside the complex as he stood on his balcony Wednesday around 4:20 p.m. That’s prime time for children to be playing at the playground across the street, he said.
“They just started opening fire … and that kind of shocked me, {it’s} broad daylight and y’all are just shooting,” he said.
It wasn’t long before at least seven people called 911 to report the shooting, but that was enough time to cause collateral damage in the neighborhood, WGHP reported. Bullet holes were visible in the windshield of a parked car and through a sign, and one person went to the hospital with a gunshot wound. It was unclear whether that person had been involved in the altercation.
The focal point of the incident was in a parking lot of the complex, where several people were gathered, Hyman said, adding that another group got out of a gray car and approached the crowd.
The station reported that 17 calls about gunshots near the complex have been made to police during the past two years, according to WGHP.
Greensboro Police have not made any arrests in Wednesday’s shooting and the department has not shared any information about the investigation, WGHP reported.
“We need better police out here and when the police come, they need to do a better job of investigating,” Hyman told the news station.
