As cities of all sizes cope with rising crime rates over the past few years, crimes of opportunity are hitting closer to home.

A High Point woman, who was taking advantage of the nice weather last week, fell prey to what would appear to be a random act of violence.

"My mom innocently sat on her own front porch and was murdered,” Luke Mallicoat, son of crime victim Christina Mallicoat, told WFMY 2 News. “She did not deserve this.”

Luke said he heard his mother scream and call for him because she thought someone wanted to rob her. By the time he arrived on the front porch, hunting rifle in hand to attempt to deter the criminal, it was too late. The assailant had already Christina, with some bullets coming close to hitting Luke as well.

Christina was taken to Baptist Hospital, where she ultimately died. Now Luke is dealing not just with funeral expenses, but with the idea that he doesn't know who killed his mother or why.

Luke described his mother as an ordained minister and a kind person.

"She would want to be remembered for caring for other people because she would always give you anything and always be there for anybody,” Luke said of his mother. “She was the sweetest person you could ever know.”

Police are investigating and ask anyone who has any information about the crime -- or any information about any violent crime or illegal activity -- to contact Crime Stoppers of High Point at 336-889-4000.
