A couple of months ago, Mike Loomis received a call every parent dreads.

“It started April 22, 2022 when I got the call from the Randolph County Sheriff's Office that they got my son,” Loomis said in a WFMY report, as he recounted learning that his son had died of a drug overdose.

Now, Loomis and Caraway Speedway have teamed up to sponsor “Race Against Drugs,” an event meant to raise awareness of drug use in the Triad. The race is set for Aug. 20.

"I hope this will remember James,” Loomis said. “People will know my son and know what he went through and how he passed. They don't need to go through this.”

Davidson Medical Ministries, and DayMark Recovery are also helping to host the event, but they’re not the only groups involved. Local businesses have come together to provide gift cards to the winners. There will also be raffles to raise money for the event.

"I just got into the kick where I'm tired of seeing kids dying of these drugs,” Loomis said. “I’ve been working on this since Madison, Alabama. I woke up at four in the morning, I said I have a dream and we're going to put it together and I named it 'Race Against Drugs.'"
