Moving into a college dorm as a freshman is an experience most people remember for a long time, but about 100 freshmen at North Carolina A&T State University will have a different memory than their classmates.
They are being housed at the Drury Inn, about five miles from campus, because of full residence halls. Although most are accepting the set-up, they hope it’s just temporary.
“I just don’t know how long I’m going to be staying here. That’s my main issue.” Laniya Henderson said in a news report. “I don’t want to stay here forever.”
The university says it’s only a short-term solution and they hope all students will be out of the hotel and in on-campus housing by Labor Day.
Still, being off campus adds more pressure to the experience of leaving home for the first time, as students have to deal with transportation issues on top of the normal college adjustments.
“I’m going to be proactive and be in the housing office everyday trying to get a dorm on campus so I don’t have to shuttle back and forth,” Henderson said.
Others, like Spencer Redmond, are just focusing on the university experience.
“Knowing that this is the place I’m going to spend the next four years, including this one, of my college career is nice,” Redmond said.
New students, whether they will be housed on campus or at the inn, spent their first hours roaming the campus to take in the college experience.
“Trying to learn where classes are and then learning about trying to get comfortable with first life experiences in college,” Jer’Asia Alston said.
