After Joy Ojo’s apartment in Greensboro was cleared out by mistake in early December, it appeared her family was in for a grim holiday season.
When Ojo came home from picking up her children from school Dec. 5, she saw a Junkyard Dogs truck on Teakwood Drive filled with all of her items, including mattresses, chairs, clothes, valuables and important documents.
“The apartment was a P instead of a T,” she told Fox. “They made a mistake and took all of our stuff without any authorization.”
The family was shocked and learned that the landlord made a mistake when it gave the salvage company the address.
“My husband and I were really shocked,” Ojo said. “We looked up, and they’re taking out all our things. The landlord said … ‘I made a mistake. They were supposed to go to a different apartment and not your place.’”
R.E. Carroll Management tried to make good on the mistake.
“At the time of the occurrence, the items were available for reclaiming, but that opportunity was declined,” the management company said in report. “As part of our efforts, the family accepted reimbursement in an amount greater than what was initially informed as damages. Additionally, we offered to move them into a larger apartment at no additional cost, and on Dec. 23, we offered a truckload of wrapped presents for the entire family to enjoy.”
Fortunately, the family didn’t have to sleep on the floor for too many nights. The Salvation Army and Greensboro Police Department both chipped in and helped the family get some necessities.
