Greensboro Police Department issued the following announcement on June 2.
On Thursday May 26, 2022 Officer Wright responded to S. Elm-Eugene Street overpass over Interstate 85 south in reference to a suspicious subject who appeared to preparing to jump.
Upon his arrival, Officer Wright observed a male with his right leg over the concrete barrier over Interstate 85 south. He had his back to Officer Wright and appeared not to hear him or acknowledge his presence. Officer Wright first asked him if he was alright, which at the time he remained silent looking toward the highway.
Officer Wright then asked the man, to step back over onto the bridge and talk to him and let him try and help. Officer Wright asked the man if he wanted to hurt himself and he shook his head yes. The man remained silent as Officer Wright kept asking him to step back onto the street. Officer Wright asked him if he was wanting to hurt himself and if he was going through a bad time. The man only stated "I can`t call it." He did not seem agitated, however, was still halfway over the bridge at this time, looking out onto the highway and silent for the majority of the encounter.
As Officer Wright kept the conversation, the man appeared to be paying more and more attention and started contemplating whether he was going to accept the help offered or not. Officer Wright asked several more times for him to step back onto the roadway and give him a chance to help him, before the man shook his head yes once more, then slowly stepped onto the street. Officer Wright continued to build a rapport with the man who stated he wasn’t safe to be alone and needed to be away for a while. Another officer transported the man to the Behavioral Heath Urgent Care while Officer Wright completed the Behavioral Health referral form and submitted it to the Behavioral Health Team.
