Washington, DC - On May 11, 2023, Congresswoman Kathy Manning (NC-06) voted against H.R. 2, the GOP immigration bill that would end America’s decades-old asylum system, revive family detention, undermine essential partnerships with humanitarian organizations, and strip funding from case management programs.
“America’s immigration system is broken. It’s the responsibility of Congress to fix it. I’m ready to work across the aisle to find sustainable solutions to this serious problem. However, with H.R. 2, Republicans have put forward an extreme and unworkable immigration proposal that would wreck our economy, destroy the asylum system, and detain children indefinitely,” Congresswoman Kathy Manning. “I’m calling on all my colleagues to come together so we can develop serious, meaningful reforms to address this complex humanitarian crisis.”
As Title 42 is set to expire, the Biden Administration has taken actions to secure the border and reestablish an orderly immigration system, including but not limited to:
- Requiring anyone who wants to apply for asylum to make an appointment through the CBP One phone app. The number of appointments available per day through the app expands from about 800 to about 1,000, and appointments can be made 23 hours a day.
- Deploying 1,5000 active-duty military personnel to assist Border Patrol.
- Opening processing centers in countries where people can apply for legal immigration to the U.S., Canada, Spain, and other countries.
- Creating a legal pathway for families from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Columbia to reunite with family members in the U.S.
- Establishing an agreement with Mexico to accept more migrants turned away from the U.S. border.
