Washington, DC - On June 26, Congresswoman Kathy Manning (NC-06) released the following statement ahead of the one-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade and upended the constitutional right to obtain an abortion. 

“When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and revoked the constitutionally protected right to obtain an abortion, they stripped women of their freedoms and bodily autonomy. In the year since the Dobbs decision, we’ve seen the devastating impacts of abortion bans across the nation; women are facing life-threatening medical complications and doctors are unable to provide their patients with the highest standard of care in a timely manner. Congress must act urgently to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to put an end to dangerous abortion bans.” 

“What’s more, the Dobbs decision upended fifty years of judicial precedent and opened the door for attacks on other fundamental freedoms, including the right to birth control. Earlier this month, I reintroduced my Right to Contraception Act to make the right to access all FDA-approved birth control federal law, and shield against further attacks on reproductive freedoms.“I’m joining fellow Democrats in Congress in pushing to force a vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act and urging my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support my commonsense Right to Contraception Act. I will always fight for reproductive rights, personal freedoms, and to protect the health of women and girls across the country,” said Congresswoman Kathy Manning (NC-06).

Following the Dobbs decision, twenty states have banned or restricted abortion access. In North Carolina, a 12-week abortion ban is set to take effect on July 1st, 2023. Read Rep. Manning’s statement on the North Carolina abortion ban here. 

A recent study from the University of California at San Francisco documented the impacts of the abortion bans in states following the Dobbs decision, finding that "healthcare providers have seen increased morbidity, exacerbated pregnancy complications, an inability to provide time-sensitive care, and increased delays in obtaining care for patients in states with abortion bans."
