Washington, DC – On June 26, Congresswoman Kathy Manning (NC-06) released the following statement applauding President Biden’s Executive Order to protect and expand access to contraception. This action comes on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade. Last week, Congresswoman Manning reintroduced the Right to Contraception Act, legislation that makes access to all FDA-approved birth control federal law.

“Access to birth control is essential to women’s health, autonomy, and economic security. Almost every woman will use birth control at some point in her life and ninety percent of Americans support access to birth control. Even so, Justice Thomas made clear in his concurring opinion in Dobbs that he is ready and willing to revisit the right for Americans to access contraception. Extreme Republicans have already proposed and enacted bills in states across the country that restrict access to birth control, including IUDs and emergency contraception. That’s why we need to take action to protect the right to contraception.

“I applaud President Biden’s actions to protect and expand access to birth control. This executive order signifies that, one year after the Dobbs decision, Democrats remain united and committed to ensuring reproductive freedoms and protecting women’s health. As we celebrate this significant step, Congress must act urgently to pass my commonsense Right to Contraception Act, to codify the right to access all FDA-approved contraceptive methods into federal law and protect against political attacks on birth control,” said Congresswoman Kathy Manning.
