City of Greensboro issued the following announcement on Feb. 13.
Greensboro Public Library has been selected by PEN America to be the first site in the nation to present a news and media literacy training, "Knowing the News" at 6:30 pm, Thursday, February 20 at Glenwood Branch, 1901 W. Florida St.
Access to accurate information is an integral component of free expression and essential to civic engagement. This 90-minute interactive training will help participants gain insight into how professional journalism works, give them tools to assess the well-being of their news diets, and equip and empower them to consume news with a critical eye as they participate in the news ecosystem, both locally and nationally. PEN America works to ensure that people everywhere have the freedom to create literature, to convey information and ideas, to express their views, and to access the views, ideas, and literatures of others.
“As we head towards a national election this fall, PEN America is eager to empower individuals to become more discerning news consumers, equipped to defend themselves against disinformation,” said Nora Benavidez, director of U.S. free expression programs at PEN America. “We believe that communities can combat the spread of disinformation by strengthening people’s media literacy skills. Libraries are the perfect place to do this: they are at the center of a community’s civic and educational life, and a critical resource for those seeking to become better informed. We are so grateful for the Greensboro Public Library’s leadership on this issue, and cannot think of a better partner to join us in kicking off this important work, especially in our growing Piedmont Region chapter in North Carolina.”
This event is free and open to the public.
