Three families in North Carolina have united with the Institute for Justice in a lawsuit that could put the state's private school voucher program at risk.
The Carolina Journal reported on Aug. 21 that in the lawsuit, N.C. Association of Educators questioned if the Opportunity Scholarship Program, which assists low-income families with funds needed to enroll their children into a choice private school, is constitutional.
“If this misguided lawsuit against the program succeeds, thousands of kids who left schools where they did not feel academically challenged or safe, will have to return," Ari Bargil an attorney for IJ said, the Carolina Journal. This lawsuit is not about the well-being of North Carolinian children.”
The IJ also stood for the program when critics attempted to shut it down roughly five years ago.
“During this time of COVID-19, it is downright heartless for any organization to attempt to deny low-income, hard-working, taxpaying citizens the opportunity to educate their children as they see fit,” PEFNC President Mike Long said, the Carolina Journal reported.
