Guilford County Schools issued the following announcement on Dec. 18.
Gabriel Goins is finding his path at the University of San Diego, thanks in part to his experience in Guilford County Schools. Goins graduated from Northeast High in 2018 as one of the top 10 students in his class and spent most of his high school career at the Academy at Smith, where he studied electrical trades/pre-engineering.
Goins intended to pursue a degree in electrical engineering, but once in college found that it was not right for him. Still, that experience helped him figure out a better path – a degree in integrated engineering with a concentration in sustainability and a minor in mathematics.
“Sustainability is my heart,” says Goins, whose goal after college is to work for a company that makes sustainability a priority. Goins is academic excellence chair for his campus chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.
Goins says experiencing a specialized program, such as the one at the Academy at Smith, is worthwhile, even if a student ends up pursuing a different field of study. “Specialized programs bring light into your path, even if you take a turn from following that path,” he says. “There’s value in finding things you like and things you don’t like in high school, as opposed to waiting until college.”
He also enjoys the smaller environment at the University of San Diego, which mimics the experience he had at the Academy at Smith. The private university became an option for him through Say Yes Guilford.
GCS students can learn more about the district’s magnet and choice programs when the application period opens on January 14. The district will host a virtual showcase between Feb. 1 and Feb. 5, allowing families to learn more about each school through videos, flyers and virtual meetings.
