GREENSBORO DAY SCHOOL: GDS Will Honor Former Teachers with Two Newly-named Campus Spaces

Teacherfemale

Greensboro Day School issued the following announcement on Sep 10.

We are happy to announce that on Sunday, September 19 at 4 p.m., we will host ribbon cutting ceremonies for two campus spaces now named in honor of former GDS teachers: the Webb Center for Teaching and Learning in honor of Tommy Webb, and the Fish and Upton College Counseling Center in honor of Tricia Fish and Jackie Upton.

In addition to the ribbon cutting, we will honor our departing faculty members with at least 20 years of service to GDS from the past two years: Rose Marie Cook, David Gilbert, Beth Hopkins, Dale Harwell, Cheryl Love, Mary Beth Phillips, Ruthie Tutterow, and Tommy Webb. Because of COVID-19, we were unable to hold our regular recognition events, and this date allows us the opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to these teachers.

We invite the entire GDS community to join us for this celebration. Please RSVP to Beth Barnwell by September 15, 2021.

Webb Center for Teaching & Learning

In his 39 years as a Bengal, Tommy Webb served as an incredible champion for allowing faculty to grow and develop in their profession. The Webb Center for Teaching & Learning will serve as a dedicated space in the McMillion Media Center where teachers in all divisions can connect, collaborate, and share ideas and best practices. Funds from the endowment will also support cross-divisional professional development opportunities, and it is Tommy’s hope that these resources allowing teachers to attend seminars, visit other schools, and grow professionally will continue to attract and retain first-rate faculty.

Fish and Upton College Counseling Center

For more than two decades, the heart of the college counseling team included Tricia Fish and Jackie Upton. The Fish and Upton Endowment is established to recognize the contribution of Tricia Fish and Jackie Upton to the development of the GDS College Counseling office.

Tricia Fish served as an English teacher during her 35 years at GDS and added college counseling to her responsibilities during the second half of her tenure.  To watch Tricia Fish interact with the students in her classroom was to see the GDS Honor Code phrase of “mutual trust and respect” in action.

Jackie Upton shared her passion for education with her GDS colleagues and her students for 27 years. The insight, thoroughness, honesty, and kindness she brought to the program earned the respect, admiration, and appreciation of students, parents, and college admissions officers, establishing individualized college counseling as a signature feature of Greensboro Day School.
