It’s still unclear exactly what happened the night of April 15 on Interstate 40 westbound in Guilford County, but it certainly shook people who heard all the commotion.

Fox 8 News reported that people heard what they thought were gunshots and lots of sirens that night near South Elm-Eugene Street and the interstate, near the Park View Inn.

Guests at the motel said they had a hard time getting any sleep after the incident.

“We saw a car coming by and like two cop cars behind it and they hit it with a PIT maneuver, and the car spun around and hit the bridge,” witness Stacey Gaines told Fox 8 News, adding that the trouble started around 7:30 p.m.

Fox 8 reported a loud boom that was loud enough to bring people out of their homes to see what was going on.

“Smoke came out and the dude got out the car and flipped over the bridge and landed straight on the ground,” Gaines told Fox 8 News.

By Saturday, when TV reporters were on the scene, the only signs of a problem were skid marks and a damaged guardrail. Although reporters learned that two cars were towed away, including a police cruiser, after a partial road closure that lasted for hours, law enforcement officials provided no information about the incident.

But it certainly left witnesses shaken.

“I couldn’t go to sleep for the rest of the night at all. I watched him jump. That was the worst,” witness Walter Wall told Fox 8 News. “When he hit, you could hear the sound. When he hit the concrete, it sounded like a gallon falling out of a bag. It’s like, I’ve seen a lot of stuff, but that’s something I didn’t want to see.
