City of Greensboro Police Department issued the following announcement on Nov. 7.
Officer Byrd responded to a disorder/trespasser on 09-22-2022 where a young couple and their 1-year-old daughter were trespassed at a house they had been visiting while attempting to find a residence in Greensboro. Officer Byrd reached out to try to find a community shelter that would take the family in, and found that no shelters were available to take the family in. She exhausted all means available to find a place for the young family who truly had no place to go. The family had an apartment they were scheduled to rent, but were not able to move in for several weeks.
Officer Byrd took it upon herself to find a hotel for the family, transport them to the hotel and paid for their room for three days with her own money. Officer Byrd followed proper procedures to get the family safely to a hotel.
Officer Byrd reached out to several local agencies and followed up with them during her off time, which began the day after this call. She was able to partner with the Office of Community Engagement and BHRT, who assisted in helping her to make contact with several community groups to get their assistance for this family. Officer Byrd continued to keep in contact with the family and even went in person to speak with community partners to help get assistance for the family. Through her hard work and determination, she was able to get their temporary housing secured until they could move into their apartment. Officer Byrd also assisted in getting additional support for the family after they were able to secure housing, so that they will be able to thrive in their new community. Her tenacity and care allowed this young family to find peace in a trying time. The family even referred to her as an “Angel” for what she did and how she blessed them beyond anything they could have ever asked for.
Officer Byrd used her own resources to initially set up this family in a hotel room, and then followed up to get them assistance. She used all resources available to her, including her own time while she was off. Her resolve to assist this family is shown by the outcome, they have moved into their apartment as of 10-14-2022! This would not have been possible for them without Officer Byrd.
