Greensboro Day School issued the following announcement on Jan. 6.
Congratulations to second grade teacher and English Department Chair Christine Brennan, who is the 2023 recipient of the Brooks Sabbatical!
This prestigious award, presented annually since 1996, funds national or international travel that will serve as the basis for study, research, and personal growth.
The Brooks Sabbatical is possible thanks to an endowment created by Dr. Jean Brooks, one of our school’s founding members.
Christine plans to use the award to travel to Greece to study the history of the ancient scholars who moved from oral storytelling to begin writing on papyrus scrolls.
Her plans include visits to important historical sites such as the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the National Archaeological Museum, Benaki Museum, the Panathenaic Stadium, and Hadrian’s Library.
“Bringing Greece’s rich history and culture back to Greensboro Day School would be a way for me to help students understand the impact the Greek people had on civilization,” Christine said.
“I imagine opportunities for cross-curricular projects that could span from the reading and social studies classes to the art room to the Imaginarium. Students could work to see relationships with ancient Greece in literature and word origin, the study of democracy, architecture, and art as well.
These connections would help paint a picture of this early civilization and serve as an introduction to this culture that students would expand upon as they continue through Middle
