City of Greensboro issued the following announcement on Feb. 1.

NCDOT, the City of Greensboro, and Greensboro Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) have decided to delay the Benjamin Parkway widening project (U-5852) to provide time to reconsider the scope and to identify future improvements that can better meet transportation and community needs.

The previously publicized construction schedule will be abandoned, and more time will be spent to determine what improvements would be most appropriate and effective for this corridor. Any future version of this project will include appropriate facilities for pedestrians and bicycles and a rethinking of appropriate intersection improvements and connections to the Wendover interchange and Green Valley Road.

Additional public involvement steps will be included in future project development efforts. A new timeline for the reconceived project will be established contingent on its selection for funding under future NCDOT project prioritization efforts.

In November, the MPO approved a resolution to instead move forward with improvements to the interchange of Rock Creek Dairy Road at Interstate 40. NCDOT has agreed to this proposal.

Thank you to everyone who commented on the recent project proposal.  If you have questions or would like to provide additional comments on this project please contact NCDOT Division 7 at 336-487-0000 or sjrobinson@ncdot.gov or MPO and City staff at guampo.greensboro-nc.gov.
